You denim junkies probably already know most of this. But sometimes it’s fun to just spout off a few good facts.
The oldest blue jeans date back to 1873, when Levi Strauss & Co. and Jacob Davis patented their riveted work pants.These images from archival sites tell you a bit about how they break down over time and that alone is cool as hell.
Here’s a good one: in the 1950s, blue jeans were banned from some American schools and theaters because they had become associated with teenage rebellion and rock ’n’ roll.
No wonder we love em.
THE DENIM JEAN. IN CULTURE.
The most expensive jeans: A pair of Levi’s worn by Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain sold for $412,750 at Julien’s Auctions in Nashville in November 2023. Cobain wore them in the “Heart-Shaped Box” video, as well as for numerous performances and photo shoots throughout his career.
The most unique jeans (I think): unspun, a pioneer in 3D-woven denim. Customers use an iPhone to create a 3D body scan, which is then used to make custom-fit jeans. Their Vega technology takes it a step further, weaving a garment directly from yarn with minimal waste.
I’ve actually visited unspun myself here in the East Bay, and it’s pretty fascinating to see this technology in person.
